Mikael Hartman
Associate Professor and Senior Consultant

Associate Professor Mikael Hartman, a Swedish-born breast surgeon, had spent most of his medical training years in Karolinska Institute and had eventually obtained his PhD from the institution back in 2007. In 2009, he began practising breast surgery in Singapore and has continued his medical journey in Singapore since then. In addition to being a Breast and Trauma Surgery Senior Consultant and also Deputy Head of Breast Services in Department of Surgery in National University Hospital, he is a researcher and heads the Singapore Breast Cancer Cohort as well as the Breast Cancer Prevention Programme in National University of Singapore. Currently, he leads a research team of more than 10 staff, including PhD students. To date, A/Prof Mikael Hartman has published more than 150 papers of peer reviewed articles in high ranking international journals and is a Principal Investigator for over 20 projects.
During his 15 years’ experience as a breast surgeon in Sweden and Singapore, he realised that his biggest impact in curing breast cancer needs to take place outside of the hospital in order to change women’s behaviour and help them stay out of harm’s way. In 2014, he decided to marry his lifelong passion for motorcycles and breast cancer, and went on The Long Ride. He brought along fellow breast surgeon, Associate Professor Philip Iau, to travel from Singapore to Sweden to educate both public and medical institutions about breast cancer through lectures and surgical demonstrations. The Long Ride successfully raised funds for research to understand breast cancer in Asia.
To combat the issues relating to early screening and detection of breast cancer, A/Prof Hartman and his partners have recently started a new business venture, where he is the Clinical Lead for the company FathomX. The company aims to focus on finding solutions for mammogram reading using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
